My Story
My upbringing in a rural environment, with a father who worked as a farmer and a mother who was a cosmetologist, has had a profound impact on the artist I have become today. Growing up on our family's farm, I was exposed to the inherent beauty of nature and instilled with the value of hard work from a young age. Additionally, my mother's passion for creativity and our collection of antiques introduced me to the realms of art, literature, and antiques, which greatly influenced my artistic perspective. During my time in high school, I actively sought out opportunities to further explore my interests in art, literature, and agriculture. By joining clubs and enrolling in relevant classes, I was able to broaden my artistic horizons and experiment with various mediums and techniques. I delved into the creation of natural dyes and paints, translating symbolism from books into visual art, and drawing inspiration from the inherited antiques in my possession. Through my upbringing and subsequent exploration, I have cultivated a distinct artistic perspective that seamlessly blends my rural background with the diverse influences I have encountered throughout my artistic journey. This fusion of experiences allows me to create art that is deeply rooted in my rural roots, while also incorporating elements from a range of artistic disciplines.
As I grew older and explored the world of design, I found a love for graphic design and its challenges. I encountered difficulties in using different materials to express artistic ideas and translating them into graphic design. These challenges stayed with me as I studied Graphic Design in college. In this environment, I furthered my career, learning principles and skills that allowed me to communicate various emotions. Which, led to my deep appreciation for artistic movements such as Modernism and Minimalism. My graphic design work is inspired by modernism and minimalism. I implement these design styles when screen-printing my designs. Nevertheless, in my artistic pursuits beyond graphic design, I am influenced by the same elements but possess the ability to explore the creation of art for my own satisfaction. As a Graphic Designer, my objective is to produce work for others and assist them in obtaining something they cherish from my creations. Conversely, when crafting sculptures, I have the ability to generate art that reflects my personal perspective, allowing others to comprehend how I perceive the world.
My sculptures serve as a means for me to convey my personal beliefs and interpretations. Most of the time pulling from Biblical narratives and Christian teachings. Many of my pieces are crafted with the intention of evoking a profound impact on those who observe them.
When asked the question, "What motivates you to create art?" I found myself reflecting on whether my creations were for my own fulfillment or intended for others. This contemplation arose during my final undergraduate year while I was in the early phases of my thesis and my professor asked me this. I struggled to determine the message I wished to convey to my audience. As a graphic design intern, my priority was on producing work for my clients rather than for my own enjoyment, which complicated the distinction between the two. Navigating through college while studying graphic design, I believe the key concept is understanding what to anticipate when collaborating with clients. You design logos, branding, websites, and more, all aimed at fulfilling your clients' expectations.
In the initial stages of my thesis research on the "Concept of the Soul," I encountered considerable challenges. After many failed attempts at creating art pieces, I came to the realization that I wanted to articulate my personal interpretation of the "Concept of the Soul" instead of merely mirroring others' views. This insight granted me a more defined direction for my artistic path. Now, as a full-time graphic designer at a company, I still create for my clients, but the art I produce—whether through design or other forms—is a reflection of my own expression, highlighting my viewpoint and distinct experiences rather than meeting the guidelines and expectations of clients in my daily work.
Drawing inspiration from my background in graphic design, my personal artistic expression is profoundly influenced. Moreover, I enhance the complexity and significance of my abstract sculptures by incorporating multiple layers into their composition. Certain artworks are specifically crafted as devotionals, aimed at prompting contemplation on matters of faith and spirituality. I am particularly drawn to exploring the concept of the soul and delving into my own perceptions and insights on this complex subject. The intricacies of the human soul captivate my interest and serve as the primary inspiration for my sculptures. The interplay between the spirit, the soul, and the physical body undoubtedly forms a complex bond; however, this connection is undeniably genuine.
